GPT-6 is now in free ChatGPT. Here's which version you get, and what Intelligent UI does

Free ChatGPT users now get GPT-6 Luna and paid plans get Sol, with answers that can include charts, buttons and forms. What changed and who gets what.

If you use ChatGPT, the model answering you has probably changed this month. On 7 October OpenAI rolled out GPT-6 to everyone in ChatGPT, free accounts included. Until then, GPT-6 had only been available on paid plans and to developers.

Which GPT-6 you get depends on your plan, and the answers themselves can now look quite different.

What's confirmed

OpenAI's announcement doesn't give usage limits for either plan.

What Intelligent UI means

The visible change is what OpenAI calls Intelligent UI. GPT-6 in ChatGPT is trained to "compose responses using text, visuals and interactive elements," choosing the format to fit the question. In practice that means an answer can include charts, buttons you can tap, forms to fill in, and small tools that work inside the conversation, not just paragraphs and lists.

Ask for a comparison and you might get a chart. Ask to plan something and you might get a form. It's the model deciding the layout, so the same question won't always come back in the same shape.

What OpenAI says changed under the hood

OpenAI's system card compares the new models with the GPT-5.6 versions they replace:

All of these results come from OpenAI's own testing.

Where this fits

GPT-6 arrived in stages. GPT-6 Astra, the top model, launched on 3 September. Sol and Luna followed on 22 September, at about half the price of the models they replaced. This is the step that puts GPT-6 in front of most ChatGPT users.

The practical upshot: if you're on the free plan, you're now using a newer model than you were a month ago, and the gap between free and paid is the gap between Luna and Sol, not between generations.
