Minecraft Dungeons II's verdict: better than the first, and critics can't agree by how much
Minecraft Dungeons II is out today for $29.99 and on Game Pass. Metacritic 74 to 76, with reviews from 9/10 to 6/10. What critics said, and who it's for.
Stated by the maker, publisher, or platform holder.
Minecraft Dungeons II launched today, 29 September, and the reviews agree on one thing: it's better than the original. Past that, they split. Scores run from a 9 out of 10 down to a 6.
What's confirmed
The split
The high end: Destructoid gave it a 9, saying it expands and improves "on the original game in most conceivable ways." TheSixthAxis called it a "perfectly tuned sequel," and CGM said it "feels like Dungeons has finally found its groove." Day One said the combat is "flashier, tougher and more engaging" than the first game's.
The low end: IGN gave it a 6 and called it a "shallow ARPG." GameSpot's 7 said it's more ambitious but keeps its predecessor's limitations, and GamesRadar+ gave it 3.5 out of 5, calling it enjoyable but short on originality.
Read together, the disagreement is about what you want from it. As a fun co-op dungeon crawler, most critics think it works. As a deep action-RPG, the lower scores say it doesn't go far enough.
Should you play it
Yes, if you have Game Pass, or you want something to play with kids or friends. Up to four players can team up, and at $29.99 it's priced well below most releases this autumn.
Maybe skip it, if you want a loot-and-build game with real depth. The lower reviews all land on that point.
It's one of several releases this week. The Witcher 3 Remastered is out today too, and Ace Combat 8 follows on 1–2 October.
