GTA 6 is officially rated M, and its content warnings match GTA V's word for word

Rockstar's site now lists GTA 6 as rated M for Mature, with the same seven content descriptors as GTA V. What the rating says, and what it doesn't.

Stated by the maker, publisher, or platform holder.

Grand Theft Auto VI has its age rating. Rockstar's official site now shows the game as rated M for Mature by the ESRB, the North American ratings board. Until recently, the same spot read "Rating Pending."

What's confirmed

Those seven descriptors are, word for word, the same ones GTA V carries. As Destructoid noted, nothing has been added or removed.

What it doesn't tell you

The ESRB hasn't yet published its full rating summary for the game, the longer write-up that describes specific scenes. Until it does, the descriptors are all there is.

The rating shown on Rockstar's site also lists one interactive element, In-Game Purchases. The ESRB lists those separately from the content descriptors, and the full ESRB entry should say whether others, such as online interaction, apply.

Why it matters

A final rating is one of the last checkboxes before launch. It usually means the game has been submitted and reviewed in a near-final state, which fits a game that's still dated for 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

For parents, the short version: it's rated the same as GTA V, for the same reasons. If GTA V wasn't right for someone in your house, GTA 6 won't be either.

For everyone else, the matching descriptors are mildly interesting in their own right. Rockstar has shown a much denser, more detailed world this time, as Game Informer's cover story made clear, but the categories of content it contains are exactly the ones GTA V had.
