Sony's GTA 6 controllers go up for pre-order today — here's what you actually get for $85

Two Vice City DualSense controllers, black and white, $84.99 each, out 19 November. Pre-orders open today. What's confirmed, and whether they're worth it.

Stated by the maker, publisher, or platform holder.

Sony's two Grand Theft Auto VI DualSense controllers open for pre-order today, 10 September, and they're the first official GTA 6 hardware you can actually put money on. Here's exactly what's confirmed, what they cost, and the honest case for and against.

What's confirmed

The design is more than a paint job. Both use a colour-shifting finish that shifts hue with viewing angle — meant to catch Vice City's sunsets and neon — with palm-tree textures moulded into the grips, a purple-to-blue pearlescent band around the middle, and GTA 6 branding on the touchpad. The white leans pastel-and-beaches; the black leans neon-and-night. Sony's framing is that the pair represent the two sides of Vice City.

Functionally they're standard DualSense units — the same haptics and adaptive triggers as any PS5 pad, which Rockstar has said GTA 6 will use for Jason and Lucia's actions. You're paying for the finish, not new features.

The distribution catch

"Limited edition" plus "limited quantities" plus a narrow distribution list is the combination that tends to produce instant sell-outs and inflated resale prices. If you want one at retail price, today's pre-order window is likely the moment, not launch day.

Is it worth $85?

No affiliate links here, so the plain version.

For it: it's $10 over a standard DualSense, which has cost $74.99 since September 2024. That's normal for a special edition, and the finish is genuinely distinctive rather than a decal. If you're buying a second controller anyway, or you want a GTA 6 keepsake that's actually useful, the premium is small.

Against it: it's a standard controller in a fancier shell. No extra buttons, no better battery, nothing functional the $75 pad doesn't do. And history says these limited runs often get reissued or discounted later once the launch scarcity fades.

The honest middle: if you want it, pre-order today rather than gamble on launch-day stock — the scarcity is real. If you're only tempted by the GTA branding, a standard DualSense plays the game identically for $10 less.

Where this sits

It's a small thing, but it's the first piece of GTA 6 you can pre-order that isn't the game itself, and the timing — pre-orders today, launch 19 November — makes it the first concrete date on the calendar between now and release. For the wider run-up, our autumn release rundown tracks everything landing before the 19th.
