Tokyo Game Show delivered Kojima, a Persona return, and a typhoon that ended it a day early
TGS 2026's first-ever five-day run got cut to four by a typhoon. Before it did: Bill Skarsgård in PHYSINT, Persona 4 Revival on Game Pass, and more.
Stated by the maker, publisher, or platform holder.
Tokyo Game Show 2026 was built to be the biggest in its history — the first-ever five-day edition, for its 30th anniversary. It ended up being four. A typhoon approaching Japan forced organisers to cancel the final day, a fittingly dramatic end to a show that had already delivered its share of surprises. Here's what actually happened.
The typhoon cut it short
The irony is hard to miss: the show expanded to five days for the first time in 30 years specifically to spread out crowds and add trial-play slots, and weather took the extra day back. Everything below was shown before the cancellation, so the reveals stand — only the final public day was lost.
Kojima's "one more thing"
The Xbox broadcast closed with the moment that got the most attention.
Skarsgård — best known as Pennywise in the recent It films and the lead in Nosferatu — is exactly the kind of prestige-cinema casting Kojima has made his signature. PHYSINT is Kojima's return to the stealth-espionage genre he defined with Metal Gear, so a marquee lead was expected; the specific name is the news.
The other genuine reveals
The Xbox showcase was broader than its usual TGS outing, leaning on Japanese and Asian studios:
- Persona 4 Revival — a new trailer spotlighting Naoto Shirogane, and confirmation it's coming to Xbox Game Pass. A remake of a beloved entry landing on Game Pass day one is a real win for that
service.
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — a new campaign trailer ahead of its 23 October launch.
- Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance — further detail on Capcom's big expansion (Capcom's Spotlight
ran the 16th, a day before the floor opened).
- Mega Man: Dual Override — a director deep-dive: two playable heroes (Mega Man and Proto Man), three
areas per stage, 50+ custom chips. Multiplatform, Spring 2027.
- Wo Long 2, Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, Wings of Ember, and a Crazy Taxi: World Tour update adding Japan as a location.
- Smaller surprises: Faraday Blues (world premiere), Bloomwalker confirmed as part of the Ni No
Kuni universe, and Shape of Dreams shipping onto Game Pass the same day.
The read
Two things stand out. First, Xbox used TGS to double down on Game Pass and Japan — Persona 4 Revival and Shape of Dreams on the service, a broadcast built around Japanese studios. After years of struggling in Japan, Microsoft is still spending real effort there, and Game Pass day-one support looks intact for now despite persistent rumours it's softening.
Second, this was a showcase show, not a blockbuster-reveal show — which is normal for TGS. No generation-defining new IP, but a strong run of dated releases, one prestige casting coup, and steady third-party support. The kind of show that fills a calendar rather than breaks the internet.
And, as ever, Nintendo wasn't there — so nothing on the Switch 2 first-party front from Chiba.
